Julia Restoin Roitfield and Daisy Lowe for Esprit SS2010

IMG_0360

I don’t think I’ve ever bought anything at Esprit before, but these ads, featuring Julia Restoin Roitfield and Daisy Lowe are making me pay attention! According to the company’s press release “Spring Summer 10, international lifestyle brand Esprit is revamped with a sensational celebrity campaign fronted by the beautiful Daisy Lowe as the fresh new face of edc by Esprit, and the stunning Julia Restoin-Roitfeld as the face of Esprit’s Women Casual range”. It’s the first time that Esprit uses celebrities for an ad campaign, and I must say that I definitely like their choice! Well, with the oh-so-stylish French Vogue Editor-in-chief’s daughter in tow, it looks like Esprit is in good company indeed. And as far as clothes go, I really like Daisy’s fringe vest! Will have to wait and see if the rest of the collection is just as fun!

Shopping: H&M November 2009

hm8

Well, November is actually pretty much over, but the holiday season is still in full force! Thus this month’s H&M Shopping post is devoted to dresses, dresses, dresses…and some sweaters! There are always so many things I want at H&M that it becomes increasingly difficult not to go nuts and buy everything I try on, but thankfully some of the items aren’t available in my size – which is the only thing that stops me. Thank goodness for that!

This time around, I spotted lots of holiday-worthy dresses: golden lamé dresses, floral dresses ala Stella McCartney, and my personal favorite - black furry dress. The latter was so adorable, yet I didn’t buy it, because as per my worst fears, I ended up looking more yeti, than chic. Oh well.

I also must let you know that H&M is having an outerwear sale, with most coats and jackets going at 50% off! Hence, the below studded leather jacket is no longer $130, but a very affordable $65! That’s a pretty good deal for real leather and great fit! And my latest addiction – menswear shopping for myself is still not satiated, as I found more lovely sweaters this time around! The one with the wolf is an homage to the “3 howling wolves” t-shirt phenomenon. I hope it brings me luck in love, life, and everything else. It’s supposed to be magical, just read the amazing comments! More shopping posts are coming soon! Stay tuned!

hm

And yes, the below cardigan is also available in H&M’s men’s section! So comfy and great for winter!

Hermès 16 Ways

Hermès scarf that is! I don’t know about you, but I always struggle to tie my scarves in creative ways. Sure I’ve tied it around my wrist, waist, head, purse handles, and my neck. But there’s limited skill to my scarf-tying. Thanks to Elle Magazine, that is no longer a problem. Here’s 16 different ways of tying your Hermès (or not) scarf!

Friday Faux Pas: Emma Cook for Topshop

emma cook topshop

Perhaps I shouldn’t be one to judge, given that I am really into Wolf and Christmassy knits right now, but those Emma Cook for Topshop sweaters are all kinds of ugly! Would you ever wear this? Maybe to a Tacky Sweater party? Probably the only collection that doesn’t make me wish we had Topshop in Canada.

I love Sasha Pivovarova! Not because she’s Russian like moi, but also because she’s a beautiful model, an artist and so much more! These Holiday ads are so much better because of her radiant smile, no? And the tall, dark, handsome and scruffy male model isn’t too bad either!

Shopping: Good Buy?

blackfridaykarloff

Well, it’s Black Friday in the States today, which means…bargains, bargains everywhere! Right? Almost. Just because certain stores advertise great deals, doesn’t necessarily mean that you’ll be getting most bang for your buck! Most stores offer a few “doorbusters” in their ads to attract shoppers into their stores, but quantities are usually limited and sometimes are plain laughable (2 per store). So what’s the best way to ensure you’re getting the best deal? Being prepared! Here’s a list of things I’ve learned over the years of being a professional shopper. Ok, not a professional one per se, but if there was ever Shopping Olympics, I’d be one of the amateurs with at least a Silver medal for my skills.

1. Make a list of things you need to buy, then research median prices for those items on the good ol’ Internet. Of course you’re bound to find something off your list, but having a list will help keep you focused and ready to pounce on real deals, not faux ones. Don’t get duped by bright SALE signs, a lot of times you can get the same deals on regular days, and thus are not that great of a deal (which you will know after a little online digging).

2. Make a list of stores you will want to visit. Check out the map of the mall/shopping complex you’re planning on visiting. Having a set plan of attack will make shopping less chaotic, so you can get in, buy your stuff, and get out in no time. Unless you’re planning on visiting every single store!

3. Wear clothes that are easy to take off/put back on. If you’re shopping for yourself that is. Winter shopping is usually more problematic than summer shopping, even if you disregard the Christmas crowds. Why? Layers, upon layers of clothes! My shopping uniform usually consists of leggings, and a cami underneath a long sweater, t-shirt or dress, plus no-fuss boots. Easy off, easy on – reduces fitting room time, and not only makes shopping faster for you, makes life for those folks in line easier too. They might not thank you, but Santa would know how good your were!

4. Bring on the coupons! So before you head out on your mission, make sure that you do a little Red Flags deals prodding! Given the state of the economy, more stores than ever are issuing coupons for all kinds of things. And while in-store deals might be amazing. What stops those deals from becoming unbe-freaking-lievable is an additional discount from that coupon you forgot to print out! To make sure you’re taking advantage of every single opportunity out there, do a quick search on your favorite stores, and print out any valid coupons to bring with you. And if anyone gives you a side-eye for your preparedness, laugh in their face, because you’re getting a deal and they are a snotty bitch!

A few other tips: bring water and snacks – noone wants to stop for Food Court meals, while there’s still so many stores left to rummage; bring re-usable bags to put your purchases in (saves you 5 cents, and is good for the environment); bring your iPod to block out the scary war-cries of crazed grandmas with blood-lusting glint in their eyes, as well as to avoid listening to Jingle Bells for a billionth time this week – “Highway to Hell” is a perfectly acceptable replacement. And most importantly, be careful, because no deal is worth Black Friday becoming Black Eye Friday!

Check out www.niagarablog.com for this weekend’s deals at Walden Galleria and Fashion Outlets of Niagara.

Holidays 2009: Purple Reign

cate the great

Two beautiful women, two very different dresses, one very similar color. Cate wowed the New York crowd in an Armani Privé dress, looking both elegant and regal as always, while Portman wore her Jason Wu frock to Brothers premiere. Can’t play favorites with these two, all I know is that I am looking for a purple dress after work today. I think this shade of purple would be a fab choice for the holiday parties this year! It’s not exactly traditional, but it looks gorgeous on blondes and brunettes alike, plus you’ll definitely stand out in a sea of red, black and green. If only I could afford a Privé dress! But that’s another story.

H&M Magazine December 2009 – Lingerie

hm-mag-winter09-Maryna-Linchuk-01

Ok, so this might be too much information for some, but most of my undergarments come from H&M. The reason? Their lingerie sets are beautiful and are pretty much designed for the ladies without the bountiful upper deck. Their bras give just enough push and have just the right amount of padding. I was actually very surprised when some of my friends shared that they have never checked out H&M’s lingerie section. I guess that’s not the first thing that comes to mind when you think H&M. But having worked at Victoria’s Secret in NYC a few years back, I can attest that the quality of H&M’s garments and their appearance, aren’t that far behind the little nothings of VS.

To me, H&M is a great Toronto alternative to the likes of La Senza (and their sets are much more affordable)! If you still haven’t checked out H&M’s lingerie section, make sure to stop by their Yorkdale and Eaton Centre locations. I am pretty sure you will not be disappointed with their selection. The only bad thing for me is that I can never decide which ones to get, and end up buying a few more than I needed in the first place. But then again, you can never have too much of a good thing!

hm-mag-winter09-Maryna-Linchuk-07

And lookie here! I guess I am not the only one wearing this menswear cardigan! Perhaps I should try this look next time!

The Row Spring 2010 Lookbook

the-row-spring-2010-9

The economy is still shaky, and it appears that the Olsen twins are very cognisant of it. Why else would they include painted on tees and socks as part of their The Row lookbook? And it makes sense, doesn’t it? Low on cash? No problem, just paint that shirt with some body paint/mud/markers and you’re good to go!

Love the red leather pencil skirt, but not craving anything else really. Though with different styling a lot of the basic pieces below will surely look much more appealing. Just not with mud and straw. Not for me.

H&M Menswear Spring 2010 Lookbook

hm mens spring 2010

Spring 2010 lookbook promises skirts, fringe, embellishments, pink scarves, multi-color patterns…No, I’m not talking about womenswear, silly! If you didn’t think that women’s line was anything to write home about, the menswear lookbook is definitely trying to push the envelope. As a newly converted omni-shopper, I look at the H&M Spring 2010 Menswear Lookbook, trying to find pieces wearable by moi. And so far, it’s pretty promising. Loving the colorful scarves, the leather camel-colored jacket is fab, and the feather t-shirt would look awesome with leggings. But the styling of this lookbook is just “meh” for me, but then again…what do I know? Are you loving any of the looks/pieces or is it just too much?

Foodie: Celestin

celestin5

I’ve been to Celestin during the holiday season a couple of years ago. I remember that they had the prettiest window display ever! Little Eiffel Towers made of wire hung in the window, inviting the passerby for a cup of coffee. I think they were blue, but I might be wrong. This year the ornaments were not there, but the food was just as good as I remember. As was the coffee.

Celestin is a chic little cafe in the Yonge and Eglinton area, with an authentic French menu. There’s Croque Monsieur, Pain au Chocolat, and omelettes avec salade for brunch, and lamb, canard, escargot, and many more for dinner or lunch. Le boyfriend and I opted for the very French Croque Monsier for moi, and Croque Madame for him. The simple combination of cheese, bread, and ham (and eggs in Madame) might’ve sounded easy-peasy and slightly boring, but au contraire was very tasty and flavorful.

The service and ambiance were also up to par, with our coffee cups refilled often, and the hostess very friendly and apologetic for not seating us right away. A little piece of advice: avoid the wait and make a reservation. We noticed the “Open Table” terminal at the front, which makes online reservations a breeze. All in all, a visit to Celestin was like going back to Paris for a quick bite, without being stuck with the expensive plane ticket. Charming, tasty and chic! But if you want a full French experience, make sure to save some room for desert! La Bamboche pastry shop that sells deeelicious macarons is just a few blocks down the road.
