Have a Great Weekend!

Hi all! Hope you guys are having a wonderful weekend! It’s quite rainy here in Toronto, but there’s still plenty to do in the city!

Check back soon for some street styles, and a follow up on my wedding outfit.

The Flare of Fred

5162_D

I am sure most of you have heard of www.fredflare.com. The site is known for its quirky and adorable clothes, accessories, and other assorted useless/not-so-useless items. How cool are those Peanut Butter and Jelly earrings? Loves it! And the Will Ferrell sunscreen? How amazing would it be to pull that bottle out of you bag on the beach? Hilarious! Below are a few other things that caught my eye on that awesome site! And the prices don’t bite either! All items below cost less than $50!

To Shop or Not to Shop?

Don’t want to lose Fashion Week? Then shop! At least that’s what the Style Coalition is “selling” in this new video. Do you buy it or do you spend your hard-earned cash on more practical things like rent in these troubled times?

REDRUM at Barneys

2009_07_barneysshot2

With the flailing economy, it seems companies will literally do anything to catch shoppers’ eyes to get them into their stores. Barneys New York E. 61st St. store took sayings “dressed to kill” and “wouldn’t be caught dead in it” a little (a lot?) too literally with their dead mannequin window displays. The mannequins dressed in Helmut Lang and A.L.C. dresses are shown in disturbing poses, arms flapping about, blood spattered on the inside of windows, looking as if they are fending off an attacker. Whoever genius idea this was, will soon surely find him/herself looking for another gig, as Simon Doonan, Barneys creative director who seemed to be unaware of the bloody mess, said that the windows crossed the line and ordered them dismantled almost immediately. What do you think? Are these windows creative or offensive? Or both?

One more bloody pic after the jump.

What I’m Wearing: Strangers’ Wedding

No, I’m not planning to crash someone’s wedding, although that’s on my list of “before 30” to-dos. The wedding I’m planning to attend this Saturday is of two people that I had never met (friends of the b/f), hence the “strangers” bit. And since I’m not quite sure how dressy the event will be, I’m thinking something classic and safe. I don’t want to stand out, nor look overly sexy. The plan is to wear a black lace overlay tube dress with beige/nude lining underneath. My inspiration for the outfit will be Erin Wasson at Teen Vogue event earlier in the year (minus the showing panties), and A/W 2009 Balmain/Dior runway shows.

Meeting Scott Schuman

scott schuman

Spent the last hour in a crowded Holts’ showroom, waiting to speak to Scott Schuman. The event was poorly organized, but the wait was well worth it. As much as I respect Scott Schuman – the photographer, much has to be said about Scott Schuman – the man. Handsome, funny, patient, stylish, and kind. He didn’t mind the throngs of fans. He answered every question thoroughly and with thought. He laughed with the audience and cracked jokes. He offered words of advice to amateur photographers and bloggers. And he also was very patient. The room was sweltering and most people, who had short lunch breaks, had to dash right after taking a picture or shaking his hand. Yet he had to stay and did not seem to mind it at all.

The paperback copy of his book was also there and it’s much thicker than I imagined! It’s amazing how he remembers every picture that he took for this book, every single subject. He told funny stories about some people that made the cut, sharing that one of the girls only eats Jelly and one of the women actually works at Holts. His words of advice were “be true”, which is what he said to the reporter’s question on what sets his blog apart from others. He is true and it shows.

Loved meeting him so much! We chatted for a bit about his trip to Venice, and how he just shoots and doesn’t care what it is or whether the settings on his cam are right. All that can be taken care of later, he just takes photos of what feels right. He also shared that he brought his girlfriend (the chic Garance Doré) to tears on a Venetian gondola, because he was such a tough subject to photograph. All told as if talking to a group of old friends. Very, very endearing!

Jo and I ran back to our offices with giddy glee. I don’t think I was this happy to meet Gael Garcia Bernal, and I love Gael! Scott will be at the Drake Hotel later tonight. Not sure if I am going to make it to that party; the crowd will probably be insane! Either way, welcome to Toronto, Mr. Schuman! It was truly a pleasure!

Big Necklace, Small Price

64699702-01

Large necklaces have been big for a few seasons now, from Marni to YSL to H&M, it seems that they are everywhere. I, too, have been looking for a “perfect” one at a decent price and finally have found it at…Forever 21! If you haven’t checked out their jewelry selection as of late, you might just be surprised as their necklaces and earrings are looking more grown up and bold this season. And for prices ranging from $10 to $25 – me likey!

Check out more neck-bling after the jump!

Sartorialist – The Book!

BookCoverG10_14Web1

So, Scott Schuman will be in Toronto tomorrow! Yay! Some of my fashionista girlfriends and I will definitely be attending to gush and blush as we take photos/get autographs from the Sartorialist himself! But, if you are truly a fan of this man’s work, then you must see this book! The Sartorialist by Scott Schuman. I believe it will be available in the US August 12th, and sometime in September internationally.

The book comes out in both hardcover (Bespoke edition…very freaking nice, but $175!) and paperback ($25 and still nice)…pick one depending on your budget. Either way, I think it would be a great addition to any stylish person’s coffee table. Think of the endless conversations (arguments) you’ll have about the many people and different outfits portrayed in Mr. Schuman’s first (and hopefully not last) book! Can’t wait to meet him and can’t wait to get my paws on this book!

Love amid Chaos

wedding

Saw them walking near Yonge and Dundas (busiest intersection in Toronto), and there was something really lovely about them. Maybe it’s the girl in me, but I love the contrast between the grimey city and these two walking hand in hand.

Foodie: Petite Thuet

petite thuet

I love macarons! Love them! Can eat a million of them at once! Not the North American “macarooooons”, not the ones of the coconut variety (although I find those tasty also)…No, not those! The French macarons are the ones that I love! Those that know me, would know that I am always on the hunt for those little delicious cookie-type pastries. One time, my boyfriend even had his friend spend hours and hours searching for a tiny macaron shop in Montreal, so that she could bring some back for me (thanks, hun!). In short, I love macarons! So imagine my delight, when Jo and I discovered this little gem of a place smack in the middle of Toronto’s financial district! The place that made my heart go pop is called Petite Thuet (apparently named after the chef that makes everything in the shop). Not only do they sell macarons, but the best of charcuterie, paninis, and some amazing-looking (and tasting) French pastries. They also sell Boylan sodas (mmm, Black Cherry!). I think I’m in heaven! The downside is that the place is a little pricey for my usual lunch-run, so I’ll just have to try and pace myself. And even though most of the macarons that they sell aren’t as good as the ones at Moroco, the black currant ones were to die for!

Mexican Festival at Harbourfront

tacos

This is why I love Toronto. There is always something to do! Last weekend, Mexican luchadores descended upon Toronto’s Harbourfront to kick some ass and to participate in some Q&A. But don’t be fooled! Behind those patent red lace-ups and scary (not) masks hide total sweethearts! Mexican wrestlers - beyond your expectations!

Night at the Museum

goethe

For someone who loves shoes as much as I do, I’d have to shamefully admit that in my 6 years in Toronto, I still have not visited the Bata Shoe Museum. Until last Wednesday that is. It’s not that I wasn’t curious to see the shoe-volution, it’s that I always put it off, thinking that I’d visit it on one of those rainy days when I have nothing else (better) to do. Well, 6 years later, and at my boyfriend’s suggestion, I finally paid a little visit to the museum that has Cinderella’s slipper as one of its exhibits. As it turned out, there was a Till 10 event happening that night, and we enjoyed a night of shoes, wine, acrobatics, and more shoes. To tell the truth, I wasn’t really impressed with the space, nor with the shoe selection, nor with the way the shoes were displayed. Plus, there was no Carrie Bradshaw section! Blasphemy! But if another rainy day comes about, and if you have nothing else on your plate, and if you love shoes, then stop by and say hello to the many shoes at Bata…but whatever you do, don’t bring your boyfriend!

The Sartorialist in Toronto!

scott-schulman-the-sartorialist

If you live in Toronto and, like me, admire Scott Schuman’s photography, then you are in serious luck! The talented photographer and godfather of street style blogging will be making a personal appearance at Toronto’s Holt Renfrew store on Wednesday July 22, 2009 12:30-2pm for the unveiling of his photographs, on display at the Bloor store location 22-29 of July. See you there!

Jo and I both fell in love with Miriam’s jacket at first sight. Loved its architectural simplicity and off-white color, as well as the way Miriam paired it with a simple white tank underneath, coupled with a pair of skinny True Religion jeans, and of course a pair of Yves Klein blue peep toe flats with fun yellowish-green nail polish on her toes and fingers. Simple and perfect!

Spent the last 20 minutes of my subway ride listening to some pathetic idiot fighting with 15 year olds about same-sex marriage. One of his arguments was “Ellen DeGeneres smells”. Sometimes I wonder, how humans had made it this far.

Thankfully, the rest of my day was by far better than my ride home! First day back at the office, and feeling chirpy and refreshed, even though still super jet lagged. Got a pedicure with Jo after work, spotted a super cute girl in a super cute jacket at the salon (to be posted), had sushi, and…finally saw the new Holt Renfrew windows dedicated to bloggers!

Loved them all! Jo’s faves were the Sea of Shoes (Not! 5-6 pairs does not a sea make!) and Bryan Boy windows. Mine was Garance Doré. One because I love her blog, and two…the window had Eiffel Towers wearing clothes!!! Enough said.

Which one is your favorite?
